Celebrating the Robert Oneal Collegiate Professorship in Plastic Surgery

Dr. Izenberg had the pleasure
of announcing Dr. Oneal.
On Thursday, September 27th friends, family and colleagues celebrated the inauguration of the Robert Oneal Collegiate Professorship in Plastic Surgery.  The first recipient was Paul S. Cederna, M.D. The event took place at the Taubman Research Building and the speakers included; James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., Dean, U-M Medical School, Michael W. Mulholland, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, Department of Surgery, William M. Kuzon Jr., M.D., Ph.D., Reed O. Dingman Collegiate Professor of Plastic Surgery, and Paul H. Izenberg, Adjunct Clinical Instructor Section of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Izenberg, who met Dr. Oneal in 1969 as an intern in surgery at Michigan, was honored to make his introduction. He summed up his speech by saying; "Many professors leave an indelible mark in surgery by writings and research. But others leave indelible marks by being a special teacher and mentor to those whom they helped train. The University of Michigan Department of Surgery, Section of Plastic Surgery, has been privileged to work with such a professor who has successfully done both. Today we honor Dr. Robert M. Oneal with a well deserved named Collegiate Professorship. Congratulations Bob!"

It was a pleasure to hear Dr. Oneal reminisce eloquently about his career, the mentors that influenced him and the students he loved to teach over the years. He mentioned how the support of his family, colleagues, partners and countless staff members allowed him to flourish as a surgeon and have such a successful career.  Dr. Oneal established a private practice at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor in 1969 and was eventually joined by many partners over the next 40 years including; Dr. John Markley, Dr. Paul Izenberg, Dr. David Hing, Dr. Richard Beil and Dr. Daniel Sherick. Every partner, including the most recent addition to the practice he founded, Dr. Ian Lytle, has had the privilege of training under Dr. Oneal. Although he retired from the Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 2006, his legacy lives on with the surgeons he trained striving to live up to his expectations of excellence.

Thanks to the support of his family Dr. Oneal  built a susuccessful
career as a plastic surgeon.

Plastic Surgery for Men: Top Procedures

Trends reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) indicates that men have been undergoing plastic surgery more and more to look younger and more youthful. Many men just want the added boost to their self confidence, they may need the nudge for their career, or they simply want to look as young as they feel. So what are the popular men's plastic surgery procedures? Liposuction, rhinoplasty (or a nose job), eye lid surgery, breast reduction, and face lifts round out the top 5 procedures men undergo.

Top cosmetic surgery choices for men in 2011.

While the numbers of men having plastic surgery has increased, men have also opted for minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures like Botox, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, soft tissue dermal fillers and chemical peels. Cosmetic surgery can help a man in ways that going to the gym cannot - You can tone and firm muscles, but smoothing the skin is a different story!

So what types of surgery are men having done? Find more men's plastic surgery statistics by visiting surgery.org or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website.

Are you a man that's been considering cosmetic surgery on your face or body? We can help. Call the office today to schedule a confidential consultation (734) 712-2323 with a board certified plastic surgeon.

Proper Hydration for Great Skin & Perfect Health

Now that the weather is changing and furnaces are turning on you might be noticing itchy, dry skin. This time of the year, now more than ever it's important to protect your body with proper hydration. Creams and lotions are good. They seal in moisture and prevent dryness, however let's consider hydration from the inside out!

Generally speaking you should consume 8-8 ounce glasses of water a day, however if you are overweight, additional water may be needed to flush everything from your body and keep you hydrated. I collected a few images from Pinterest I thought were especially helpful, and here are some tips to help you remember to drink your water!

1) Rubber bands - They aren't just for binding things  together, they can also be used on water bottles, on a glass or even worn on your wrist. Start the day by wearing 8 of them or wrapping them on your water bottle, then as you drink 8 ounces remove one rubber band!

2) Water bottles - Use 8 refillable water bottles and stock them in the refrigerator  find water bottles with measurements marked on the side or create your own measured water bottles with colorful tape and Sharpies. Mark the bottle with times throughout the day when you should have consumed that much water! You'll be surprised at how easy it is to drink when you are presented with a huge water vessel.

3) Drink a glass immediately upon waking up and directly before bed. That's two down! Then don't eat a meal without a glass of water! Guess what you now have consumed 5 glasses for the day - Three more and you are set!

Drinking water certainly can help keep us healthy and fit, but it can also improve brain function, bodily functions and improve the way we look and feel. Feeling a little bloated, then drink up. Hydration helps keep our bodies slim too. Feeling a bit fatigued or under the weather, let's flush out those toxins and drink up. Whatever your reason, there is no bad reason to drink your water. So grab a glass and take a guzzle. You'll be glad that you did!

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as such, the staff and surgeons at the Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery want to remind women everywhere to complete a monthly home screening - It's for better health and early detection of breast cancer.

Did you know that in 2011, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 57,650 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer? Statistics also show that approximately 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop an invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Those are some statistics that are not easily ignored, nor should they be.

Home self examinations are easy to do too, many physicians offices have shower cards or pamphlets. Websites like healthywomen.org even offer free information by download, or you can even order a free shower card with paid shipping costs. So get your card today for a full explanation of how to conduct your exam.

A breast self exam is easy to do though. There are three basic ways to conduct your breast self-examination - In front of a mirror, in the shower and lying down. With all three methods, you are checking for changes in the size or shape of your breast, dimpling, puckering, redness, scaliness or changes in shape, size, texture or skin color. Also notice if any discharge is present.

Monthly examinations are quick, and help you be more aware of any changes. If you notice changes, contact your health care provider immediately for a thorough examination and necessary treatment.

After Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer

If you are a breast cancer survivor, breast reconstruction can be performed at the time of a mastectomy or years later into the healing process. Every woman's breast cancer experience is unique so breast reconstruction treatments should also be unique. CPRS understands that and has compassionate surgeons with years of experience to assist our patients.
"When meeting my surgeon and his staff we discussed my breast cancer diagnosis diagnosis and I learned about my options. I felt we were in this together. Everything was handled with kindness and professionalism." ~ CPRS patient
Through several plastic surgery techniques, breast reconstruction after a mastectomy can restore a breast to its near normal shape, appearance and size. In this video, Dr. Paul Izenberg demonstrates breast reconstruction and various approaches using BRANDI - a Breast Reconstructive Anatomical Doll Instructress designed by Dr. Izenberg. Dr. Richard Beil also answers your questions about breast reconstruction after a mastectomy in this brief video for WXYZ with Lila Lazarus.

If you are a breast cancer survivor who has been contemplating breast reconstructive surgery, trust the team of experienced surgeons at the Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. They are artistically talented, technically skilled and compassionate, addressing your unique needs during or after a mastectomy. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call our office 734-712-2323.

Fall Skin Care

by Gina Thompson

I know if it’s been a good summer, I will be paying the price in the fall. All of these hot, summer days have been wonderful, but the sun can certainly leave a lasting impression that can age the skin. I generally change a few things in my routine as the fall season arrives that boost hydration, increase cell turnover and minimize pigmentation. Here are some of my favorite products and treatments for the fall.

SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a powerful antioxidant solution that protects against environmental aging and helps create more youthful looking skin. It contains a synergistic antioxidant combination as well as essential lipids to enhance the skin’s barrier function. I always use an antioxidant, but this one is my choice for fall because of its ability to protect and hydrate the skin. Great combination!

GlyMed Plus Treatment Cream has been around for many years and continues to be a staple in my skin care routine. It is a perfect solution for drier skin that needs exfoliation as well as hydration. The Treatment Cream contains glycolic acid for cell turnover and rich emollients to moisturize dry skin. My skin loves this luxurious cream in the fall.

Epiquin Micro is an active treatment product that contains hydroquinone for skin lightening and vitamin A for exfoliation. Hydroquinone is one of the most effective ingredients for minimizing pigmentation and I like to use Epiquin Micro every fall to erase the signs of the summer sun. It always makes a difference.

Microdermabrasion is a popular skin care treatment that provides superficial exfoliation. When paired with a light chemical peel, it is a perfect solution to resurface and brighten the skin. After a summer of sun exposure and sunscreen use, I like to treat myself to a microdermabrasion treatment. It feels like I am erasing the damage of the summer sun and my skin feels so clean and refreshed afterwards.

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) Photo Facials are a great answer for very stubborn pigmentation. A series of 4 or more treatments is recommended for best results to treat red (broken capillaries) and brown (pigmentation). IPL is not recommended during the summer months since we cannot treat skin that is tan. Fall is the perfect time of year to treat that unwanted pigmentation and I have lots of clients who come in for a maintenance treatment (or two) or begin their series of photo facials in September or October.

Your fall skin care program may require some changes, but it usually isn’t complicated. If you are unsure feel free to discuss it with us at your next skin care visit. We look forward to seeing you.

Adult Acne: It's No Joking Matter

I was reading with interest a humerous blog on the Project Beauty Website titled ANONYMOUS ADULT ACNE: The Whys? today which really had me cracking up. Not that adult acne is a joke, however the tongue-and-cheek piece was oh-so-relatable to this 40-ish mom.

I sometimes wonder, "why am I breaking out?" "Are my hormones giving me grief?" and "What can I do to stop the insanity!?" And it hit me, why not ask my favorite CPRS Clinical Skin Care Specialist Gina Thompson the types of products that will help men and women in their 30's, 40's, 50's or even their 60's who are suffering from adult acne!

"The good news is that some active ingredients used to treat acne also treat aging skin." Thompson said, "Glycolic acid and retinoids encourage cell turnover to help reduce existing acne and prevent future breakouts, but also minimize fine lines and create smoother, softer skin. In addition, anti-oxidants like vitamin C help protect the skin from free radicals that cause future aging, and correct existing damage, acne and photo-aged skin."

For men and women who are suffering from adult acne, she suggests either Triacneal from Avene, which contains Retinaldehyde and Glycolic acid for cell turnover and Efectiose to control redness and irritation or     Phloretin CF by Skinceuticals. The combination of vitamin C, Phloretin and ferulic acid in Phloretin CF is perfect for correcting existing damage, preventing premature signs of aging and accelerating healthy skin cell turnover.

I have also read that drinking plenty of water keeps your face and body hydrated, but can also help to clear acne. I actually found several great tips for great looking skin on WebMD. Of course it's always wise to get expert advice when looking for assistance with your health and well being, so please consult your physician before making changes.

Have you suffered from adult acne? Are there products that have helped you to keep your skin, clean, clear and healthy looking? We'd love to know!

Travel Skin Care Essentials

by Gina Thompson

What skin care products do you take when you travel?
Every time I get on an airplane I attempt to avoid checking a bag. This presents a challenge pretty much every time I travel, but I am getting better at it with each flight. Limiting my assortment of shoes is an obstacle (thankfully I have small feet), but the liquid and gel regulations are what really perplex me. According to the Transportation Security Administration if you want to carry on, you must follow the 3-1-1 guidelines. This means that your liquids and gels must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less and all must fit in1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag. 1 bag per passenger is allowed.

I realize that a quart size bag may seem quite small, but you can get lots of travel size goodies in that little bag. Think about the essentials you will need for each particular trip and pack minis of everything you can. Also, call your hotel for a list of products that will be available in your room so you can streamline your choices. If you are confused about what you can and cannot bring in your carry on, download the My TSA app to your smart phone and ask, ‘Can I bring my…’ and get answers.

Here are some of the skin care essentials that I always travel with.

GlyMed Plus Purifying Cleanser
This multi-tasking cleanser removes makeup and cleanses the skin. It is creamy, refreshing and infused with real lavender oil to calm the skin. I never travel without it.

Clarisonic Mia 2
The latest version of the Clarisonic Mia gives you all the benefits of sonic cleansing in a compact, easy-to-use style and comes with a protective case. I take this with me when I travel and it isn’t a liquid or a gel, so it doesn’t have to fit in my quart-sized plastic bag. Perfect!

GlyMed Plus Photo Age Protection Gel SPF 15
I have used the Photo Age Protection Gel daily for almost 20 years. It is a great daytime moisturizer that lightly hydrates the skin and provides good protection as well. It works in most climates, so it is always with me when I travel.

Avene Thermal Spring Water
The mini size (50 ml) of this Thermal Spring Water is compliant with the TSA regulations so you can bring it with you on the plane. Simply spray the water onto the skin. It refreshes and hydrates without disturbing your makeup. I love it.

GlyMed Plus Intense Peptide Skin Recovery Complex
This light treatment cream is an essential when traveling because it can calm redness, moisturize the skin and soften lines. You can layer it under your daytime moisturizer, use it at night and also as an eye cream. I never forget this little pot of gold when I travel!

I think that it’s O.K. to skip your complete regimen for a couple of days when traveling.
Pack a few skin care essentials and get back to your complete routine when you return. Also, treat yourself to a hydrating facial treatment before your trip to look and feel refreshed.

Take Me Out To The Spa: Men's

by Gina Thompson

According to the International Spa Association men now account for 31% of spa goers!
As we are basking in the heat of summertime, it is easy to envision men of all ages watching a baseball game, enjoying a cold beer or standing over a flaming hot grill, but can you imagine these same men spending a day at the spa? The image is almost comical: Men in fluffy robes and slippers, meditating next to faux waterfalls while sipping a cup of detoxifying green tea.

The truth is more and more men are taking time out of their busy schedules to visit the place that most people affiliate with ‘ladies who lunch’ not our brothers, husbands or the average macho sports fan. Ironically, back in ancient Egyptian and Roman times it was in fact the men, not the women, who were the primary spa goers. Balneotherapy was a natural approach to health and healing utilizing hot spring waters, gases and other natural elements from the earth with massage techniques and aromatherapy to create physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The art of water therapy is how the concept of “spa” originated and the men were actually our founding fathers.

According to the International Spa Association, men now account for 31% of spa-goers and create annual revenues of 9.7 billion dollars for North American spas.

More and more men are taking the time to improve their looks with Aesthetic products and treatments, but most of them probably aren’t discussing it with their friends at a ball game. The truth is, men are one of the fastest growing populations of the cosmetic market and many services are available just for them.
  • Skin care products for men are created with their needs in mind. You will find simple systems and practical packaging with masculine scents to suit your specific needs.
  • Microdermabrasion and facial peels are great choices for superficial resurfacing to smooth fine lines, improve rough skin texture and lighten age spots.
  • Botox and Dysport are perfect for those angry frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet near the eyes.
  • Dermanl fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm can fill in those deep creases around the mouth and redefine the jaw line.
  • Laser hair treatments can be an effective solution for excessive chest or back hair.
  • Cosmetic surgery is also available for more dramatic results. An upper blepharoplasty can improve droopy eyelids, a lower facelift can tighten aging skin and liposuction can be considered for those love handles.
The most popular spa treatment for men is the basic massage, but their menu of services is growing and ‘men who spa’ are becoming a new normal- not the exception. So, if you are a man and secretly desire a little pampering of your own or just want to look and feel a little younger, you certainly have options.

Summer Skincare

By Gina Thompson

What products do you use for summer skin care?
Summer is definitely my favorite time of the year. I happily trade out my Uggs and heavy layers of black clothing for flirty sundresses and open toe sandals of every color. I modify my skin care wardrobe this time of the year as well by swapping out creamy moisturizers for lighter serums and lotions and spending a little more time pampering my feet, hands and body skin.

Seasonal skin changes are common for most skin types and may require minor adjustments throughout the year. Your summer skin care routine may require simply switching to a lotion instead of a cream for nighttime moisture, using a more active cleanser in the morning to feel squeaky clean, adjusting your Retinoid use based on your sun exposure or layering on more sunscreen.

I look forward to lightening up in the summer months and I want to share my list of summer essentials with you.

GlyMed Plus Stem Cell Serum
This is my number one summer skin care essential. It is super lightweight, feels great on the skin and provides an extra layer of anti-oxidant protection under my sunscreen. I will not be caught without my Stem Cell Serum!

GlyMed Plus UltraHydro Gel
UltraHydro Gel is a staple in my skin care wardrobe, but it definitely gets more use in the summertime. It works great alone to hydrate oily skin types, but I like to mix it with my day and nighttime moisturizers. It thins out my creams and lotions while boosting hydration levels. Perfect!

SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion SPF 50
Most of my clients would agree that Physical Fusion is probably one of the lightest sun blocks out there. It is compliant with the current FDA guidelines for sunscreens providing an SPF 50 protection with a soft tint. It feels like nothing is on your skin and even the oiliest skins swear by this amazing product. This is a staple all summer long for me.

GlyMed Plus Chocolate Masque
Who doesn’t love chocolate? This delicious masque contains cocoa, reservatrol, and the acai berry for anti-aging and restorative benefits. Use it before a special event for a beautiful glow, after a professional skin care treatment to prolong the benefits or to soothe a burn. If you get too much sun one day, just apply this masque at night to reduce inflammation. It will not only soothe and calm the skin, but it will also help prevent pigmentation that may develop from inflammation after sun exposure. Fabulous.

Glytone Lipo-Lift Massage Kit
This product has been around for a while, but it is new to us! The shower gel and body massager are used together in the shower to help stimulate microcirculation and maximize drainage for firmer looking skin. I definitely feel like it helps keep my legs toned and smooth during swimsuit season. It takes a little extra time in the morning, but it is worth it!

Be sure to share your summer skin care essentials with us on the CPRS Facebook page or in the comments below.

SkinCeuticals and Damaging Infrared Radiation

Do you ever wonder about why antioxidants are good for your skin? This is a good explanation about antioxidants in the SkinCeutical products we carry.

Over the past decade, skin care proponents have made great strides in raising public awareness of the dangers of UVA/UVB radiation and the need for daily sun protection. Most of us who once flocked to the tanning bed or oiled ourselves up for a day on the beach now take care to wear our hats, look for shade, and slather sunscreen from head to toe. Even when not lounging at the pool or beach, we try to be dutiful in our daily sun care routines, wearing sunscreens even when the days are cold or overcast and the only sun we’ll see is from the tiny window we pass on the way to the conference room.

We know that UVA and UVB rays are damaging, leading to accelerated skin aging…but what about the rest of the solar spectrum? Once again, SkinCeuticals is delivering on its promise to provide quality products backed by science, while educating the public on the dangers of the other side of the solar energy coin: Infrared Radiation.

UVA and UVB rays damage the skin and accelerate the aging of skin. IR rays
though  go much deeper and need to be considered when seeking sun protection.
Infrared Radiation, with a wavelength longer than UV rays and visible light, accounts for 54% of the total solar energy reaching the skin. By comparison, UVA and UVB make up only 7% of the total solar energy. While there are three types of Infrared Radiation (IRA, IRB, IRC), over half of the 54% reaching the skin is IRA, which penetrates skin deeper than UVA, UVB, IRB, and IRC, with 65% reaching dermal layers. Recent studies confirm that IRA is responsible for accelerating skin aging by forming harmful free radicals in the dermis, diminishing skin’s antioxidant capacity, and triggering further biological effects that result in wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and reduced firmness.

While sunscreens are an important first line of defense, these UV filters block only up to 55% of UV-generated free radicals, and do not protect against Infrared Radiation wavelengths. Therefore, antioxidants are an essential second line of defense against the total solar spectrum. Fortunately, SkinCeuticals has the Solar Solution, offering an impressive portfolio of superior antioxidants, which partner with sunscreens to form a comprehensive photoprotection strategy. By effectively neutralizing the IRA- and UV-induced free radicals not blocked by UV filters, SkinCeuticals antioxidants help protect the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin from the inside, then go a step further to correct existing photodamage.
"SkinCeuticals continues to be the leader in antioxidant innovation, research and results. These new findings further cement that claim. Our antioxidants are proven to prevent and correct in the epidermal, dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin to yield industry leading results!" Liz Kramer, SkinCeuticals
